Elyria District Catholic High School had its formal beginnings when 19 students began their classes at St. Mary School in Elyria in 1947. The construction of EDCHS was completed in 1949, and the first graduation was held for 17 students on June 2, 1950.
The only co-ed Catholic high school on the west side of Cleveland, Elyria Catholic has educated three generations of families with a nurturing environment and personalized approach to education. The first director was Rev. Joseph B. Lehane, S.T.D., and the school was staffed by the Sisters of Notre Dame.
Elyria Catholic became the first Lorain County school to be recognized as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the United States Department of Education. Elyria Catholic High School students are prepared for the challenges of an increasingly complex, competitive, and challenging world. With state-of-the-art technology in all classrooms, one-to-one Chromebook initiative, rich and diverse academic opportunities including, college preparatory curriculum, honors, advanced and CCP offerings, newly renovated chemistry lab, Makerspace, art, theatre, broadcasting, business, and engineering to list a few. A four-year strategic plan has successfully moved EC forward with a vision and a master plan.
The Knights of Columbus Field became a reality in the early 1960s. The Dads' Boosters have funded many athletic improvements for the student-athletes, most recently assisting in the funding of a strength and conditioning trainer and facility. Many successful athletic programs have been fostered through the tradition of state-level competition and titles.
Elyria Catholic students are surrounded by an engaged community of teachers, parents, alumni, friends, and donors who take great pride in their successes and feel a profound sense of commitment to support them both inside and outside of the classroom. A nurturing learning environment allows student to discover their unique gifts, inspired to pursue their own path to academic, athletic, social, and spiritual development.
